Porto dei Piccoli supports families to ease their hospital stay and home care.
PORTO DEI PICCOLI is an association born in Genoa in 2005 from the idea of Gloria Camurati Leonardi (mother, former teacher and lover of the sea) to bring the sea and the culture of the port to all the children and teenagers who have to face the disease every day because through the game they can find moments of serenity and leisure.
Psychologists, pedagogues, and graduates in motor sciences and artistic disciplines enter the ward and homes every day to become a point of reference and create moments of serenity during the path of the disease following the Play Specialist model. Since the nineteenth century, the nursing, psychological and pedagogical sciences have opened up to the curative-rehabilitative potential of hospital play, giving life to a long-lived tradition, supported by scientific evidence on the positive effects of the Play Specialist intervention on the bio-psychosocial health of the child.
The association’s activity is not limited to its presence in hospitals. The Porto dei Piccoli organizes open-air days for families to discover the area and activities in schools to put children and young people under treatment in contact with their peers and share the values of solidarity, volunteering and attention to people with fragility.
The sea and the port maritime environment are the elements that distinguish all the activities in an ideal journey from hospital rooms to port docks.
Thanks to donations, Porto dei Piccoli guarantees adequate support to assisted children 365 days a year, free of charge and through its team of professionals. In 17 years of activity, it has involved over 11,000 children and young people throughout Italy and collaborated with some of the leading Italian pediatric centres.
